Jack the Giant Slayer Set Visit: Interview Highlights
Jan 31st 2013, 00:00

Making any movie can be a demanding task, but Bryan Singer really had his hands full with Jack the Giant Slayer . Not only did he take on the pressure of having to appropriately adapt a beloved fairy tale, ensuring the story stays in tact while also giving it new dimension, but then he loaded up on technical challenges to such an extent that each and every shot was so expansive that Singer had to be sure even the most minute details were in prime shape before rolling. Tough work for Singer, but his keen understanding of the material, the opportunity to work with previz and SimulCam, and some wonderfully elaborate sets helped guide the actors through a production that couldn't really coalesce until the digital elements came together in post. When we weren't frolicking through...

We've already seen Alice in Wonderland and a double dose of Snow White, but with Maleficent , Pan , Sleeping Beauty , Pinocchio and possibly more fairy tales-turned-big screen epics hitting theaters in the coming years, perhaps Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Slayer will actually wind up slipping in at just the opportune time. The project is a long time coming for Singer. He first signed on to direct back in September of 2009, but didn't get the green light until just over a year later after which he went through a lengthy pre-production process before finally bringing the project to set in the spring and summer of 2011. Even then, the film still wasn't in the clear, getting ousted from its original Summer 2012 drop date, settling back in on March 22nd, only to be moved...

"I cannot understand why you should wish to leave this beautiful country and go back to the dry, gray place you call Kansas," the Scarecrow tells Dorothy in L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." "That is because you have no brains," Dorothy responds. "No matter how dreary and gray our homes are, we people of flesh and blood would rather live there than in any other country, be it ever so beautiful. There is no place like home." Although the line, "There's no place like home" is better known today for its use in Victor Fleming's 1939 big screen musical adaptation of the text, the novel's sentiment is one that's hard to dismiss when stepping through the entrance of Pontiac's Raleigh Michigan Studios. It's here...
